Earth Timeline

Below is a great timeline animation by Algol from around 5 years go. The animation is released under a free culture licence. There is only minimal text that we can use as a timeline of events (see Globe Timeline Triggers) - so I imagine doing this manually.

This video shows how the Earth may have looked like in the distant past. The reconstruction of plate tectonics is based on Paleomagnetic Data, though may be inaccurate before 1,000 Ma. The temparature, atomospheric composition, and length of day are also given, though these are estimates.

The animation was created using GPlates, which has the advantage of being based on open data and makes a great basis for the hard science fiction aspect of the Earth Edition of the Hitchhikers project.

There is another nice plate techtonics video produced by Howtown.
