Forecasting

Forecasting is the practice of projecting likely outcomes based on present data and trends. In futures work, it is often contrasted with Backcasting.

While forecasting draws lines forward from today’s conditions, it can sometimes limit imagination by assuming the future is an extension of the present. Still, it is valuable when exploring probabilities and risks.

Forecasting is used in economics, climate science, and technology studies, where data models give insight into possible futures.
